In addition to The Hand and The Silent Seven, The Shadow also battled other one-shot collectives of criminals, including The Hydra, The Green Hoods, The the shadow White Skulls, The Five Chameleons, and The Salamanders. The introductory line from the radio adaptation of The Shadow – “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” – spoken by actor Frank Readick, has earned a place in the American idiom.

He was the inspiration for numerous other pulp characters as well as being a major influence in the creation of the comic-book superhero Batman. In 1963 Belmont Books published several new Shadow novels written by Walter Gibson. Alec Baldwin played the title character in the film The Shadow (1994), which incorporated elements from both the pulp character and the radio show. In contrast to the pulps, The Shadow radio drama limited the cast of major characters to The Shadow, Commissioner Weston, and Margo Lane, the last of whom was created for the radio series.

But as Stephen Vladeck documented in his excellent book, The Shadow Docket, over the past decade there was a notable growth in matters decided by the court on its emergency docket. One of the doctors tells Khan that they were able to save his life by removing a part of his brain, nullifying Khan’s psychic abilities, before walking away and revealing a ring the Shadow gives to his agents. The Shadow made an uncredited cameo in issue #2 of DC’s 1996 four-issue miniseries Kingdom Come, re-released as a trade paperback in 1997. The Shadow appears in the nightclub scene standing in the background next to the Question and Rorschach. In 1989, DC released a hardcover graphic collection reprinting five issues (#1–4 and 6 by Dennis O’Neil and Michael Kaluta) of their 1970s series as The Private Files of The Shadow.

Universal allowed Raimi to develop an original treatment inspired by The Shadow in 1987 with the development of Darkman.8 David Koepp had listened to the radio serial of The Shadow as a child, when CBS re-ran it on Sunday nights. Koepp was hired in 1990 to write a new draft, and was able to find the right tone that the studio liked.7 Bregman remembers, ‘Some of them were light, some of them were darker, and others were supposedly funnier – which they weren’t.
